Holy Quran
The Quran is the sacred scripture of Islam, considered to be the literal word of God (Allah) and revealed to the Prophet Muhammad over a period of about 23 years, starting around 610 E. It is written in classical Arabic and is highly revered for its eloquence and literary beauty.
Comprising 114 chapters known as surahs, the Quran contains verses, or ayahs, that provide guidance and moral teachings for Muslims. It is believed to be a divine miracle and proof of the Prophet Muhammad's prophethood.
The process of preserving the Quran was meticulous. During Muhammad's time as a prophet, the revealed verses were memorized by his companions and also written down on different materials. After Muhammad's death, a group of 12 prominent individuals, including Uthman ibn Affan, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and others, collected these written verses and verified their authenticity with the help of two witnesses for each verse.
To avoid any discrepancies, Caliph Uthman established a standard version of the Quran in the dialect of the Quraysh tribe, which was the tribe of Prophet Muhammad. This version, known as the Uthmanic codex, became the basis for the Quran that is widely read and recited by Muslims today.
The Quran's teachings cover a wide range of subjects, including stories from the past, moral principles, guidance on worship, and the foundation for Islamic law (Sharia). Muslims recite the Quran during prayers, and many devout individuals aim to memorize the entire book, earning the title of "hafiz."
Today, the Quran continues to hold a central place in the lives of Muslims around the world. Its profound impact on Islamic culture, literature, and spiritual practice is a testament to its enduring significance. Various original copies, or mushafs, have been preserved in museums, underscoring the importance of safeguarding this sacred text throughout history.
