The new MacBook Pro with M4 chip just launched, and I finally got my hands on one. After two weeks of daily use, here's my detailed review covering everything from performance to battery life.
Processor Performance
The M4 chip is genuinely impressive. If you're coming from an Intel Mac, the speed difference is night and day. Opening heavy applications like Photoshop or Adobe Premiere is almost instant. Video editing in 4K is smooth without rendering delays.
I tested it with some real-world tasks. Exporting a 10-minute 4K video that previously took 15 minutes now takes just 5 minutes. Working with large Photoshop files with hundreds of layers has zero lag. The performance is there when you need it.
For coding work, the compilation speeds are fantastic. Maven projects that took 2 minutes on my Intel laptop now finish in 45 seconds. If you're a developer, this matters a lot.
However, not every application is optimized for the M4 yet. I noticed a few older apps run through Rosetta translation, which adds a small performance hit. But most modern software is already native.
The New Display
The display has been upgraded to mini-LED technology, which is a significant improvement. The brightness is higher at 1600 nits peak. Colors are more accurate, and the contrast is exceptional. Watching movies is genuinely enjoyable on this screen.
The 16-inch display option is perfect if you do creative work. Having more screen real estate makes a huge difference when you're editing photos or managing complex projects. The resolution is sharp at any viewing distance.
The 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate feels buttery smooth. Scrolling through documents and web pages feels fluid. It's not essential for productivity, but once you experience it, you notice the difference.
Keyboard and Trackpad
The keyboard is comfortable and has good key travel. It's reliable – no sticky keys or issues. Typing for long periods doesn't cause fatigue. The spacing is good, and feedback is satisfying.
The trackpad is enormous, which takes some getting used to. But once you adapt, it's amazing. The haptic feedback feels natural, and palm rejection works perfectly. You can perform complex gestures without accidental activation.
Battery Life
This is where the M4 MacBook Pro really shines. I'm getting 16-18 hours of real-world usage with moderate work. Heavy editing work gets me around 10-12 hours. This is actually usable for all-day work without needing to search for a charger.
The 140W USB-C charger is compact and charges the battery quickly. From zero to 50% takes about 30 minutes, which is reasonable.
Build Quality and Design
The aluminum unibody construction is solid. The laptop feels premium. It's lightweight at 1.6kg, making it portable even though the screen is large. The space gray color looks professional and hides fingerprints well.
The thermal management is excellent. The laptop stays cool during heavy work. Fans do kick in under heavy load, but they're not overly loud. The bottom of the laptop doesn't get uncomfortably hot even during intensive editing.
Ports and Connectivity
The three Thunderbolt 4 ports give you flexibility for external drives and peripherals. The HDMI port is useful if you're connecting to projectors. The SD card slot is a nice inclusion for photographers.
WiFi 6E connectivity is fast. I'm getting excellent speeds on my 5GHz network. Bluetooth 5.3 works reliably with multiple devices.
Practical Considerations
The price is the biggest hurdle. A fully configured M4 MacBook Pro can exceed PKR 500,000 in Pakistan. This is a significant investment. You're paying for quality and performance, but it's not affordable for everyone.
The operating system is macOS, which has a learning curve if you're coming from Windows. But once you learn the shortcuts and ecosystem, it's actually quite efficient for creative work.
Who Should Buy This?
If you're a content creator, video editor, programmer, or designer, this laptop is worth the investment. The performance gains are real, and you'll recoup the cost through saved time and increased productivity.
If you're a casual user who mainly browses the internet and uses Word, you don't need this machine. A basic MacBook Air would serve you better.
My Verdict
The MacBook Pro M4 is an excellent laptop. Performance is exceptional, battery life is impressive, and the build quality is premium. It's expensive, but if you use your laptop for income-generating work, the investment pays for itself through increased productivity.
